Manners
In English-speaking culture it's customary to ask about someone when s/he asks about you. Not doing can be considered rude:
Good:
Jon: Hi, Don! How are you?
D: I'm good, thanks for asking. And you?
J: Great! Thanks!
Bad: J: How are you, Don?
D: Good!
The feeling could be:
'Gee, that guy is self-centered', or 'Doesn't he care about how I am doing?'

Twitterより。英語圏では、自分の近況を尋ねられたら相手にも尋ね返すのが礼儀とされることがあります。よい例：ジョン「やあドン、元気？」ドン「元気だよ。聞いてくれてありがとう。君は？」ジョン「元気だよ、ありがとう！」。悪い例：ジョン「元気？」ドン「元気」。これだけで会話が終わると、相手に「自分にしか関心がないのかな」「こちらのことは気にならないのかな」と思わせる場合があります。
